## **Summary:**

Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at the Washington-area home of Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, on the morning of 12 October 2026\. The Department of Justice said the warrant had been judicially authorised and that the search formed part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

People familiar with the investigation told Fox News Digital and Reuters that it concerns alleged immigration fraud in paperwork filed by Omar's late father when she was a child. Nur Omar Mohamed was a colonel in the Somali National Army who brought the family out of Somalia after the collapse of the Barre government in 1991\. They were resettled in the United States as refugees in 1995, when Omar was 12, and she has said she became a citizen in 2000 through his naturalisation.

Omar said the search was an attempt to target political enemies and to weaponise federal law enforcement. Her communications director said she had done nothing wrong.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and the White House border czar, Tom Homan, had each said publicly in September that an investigation involving Omar was under way, though both were discussing a separate allegation about her 2009 marriage.

## **Detailed Report**

### **1\. Homeland Security Agents Search Omar's Home as Justice Department Confirms Criminal Inquiry**

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the criminal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, arrived at Omar's residence in the Washington area in the early morning of Monday 12 October. Agents in HSI jackets were seen outside the home as boxes were carried from the residence to vehicles.

A Department of Justice spokesperson said:

> Today in the Washington, DC area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

The department later confirmed that the investigation is criminal in nature, and a Homeland Security spokesperson referred questions to the Justice Department. Fox News justice correspondent David Spunt reported from the scene that a federal judge had signed the warrant.

A judicially authorised search warrant is issued by a federal judge on a finding of probable cause that a crime has been committed and that evidence of it will be found at the premises. It is distinct from an administrative immigration warrant, which an immigration officer may issue without judicial review.

The Justice Department's statement did not name Omar, describe the conduct under investigation or identify any subject, and the department has not released the warrant affidavit or an inventory of items taken from the home. No charges have been filed.

### **2\. Omar's Father Served as a Colonel Under Somalia's Socialist Government**

Ilhan Omar's father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a senior officer in the Somali National Army. He received a military education in the Soviet Union, rose to the rank of colonel and led a regiment in the Ogaden War against Ethiopia in 1977 and 1978\. Former colleagues described him as one of the officers recognised for their work. Some accounts also describe him as a teacher trainer. His military career ended with the collapse of the government in 1991\. The account of his service comes from an obituary published by the Sahan Journal in June 2020, drawing on interviews with his former colleagues, and is consistent with reporting in the Star Tribune.

He served under Siad Barre, who took power in a military coup in 1969 and the following year declared Somalia a socialist state governed by what he called scientific socialism, a doctrine combining Marxist principles with Islam and Somali self-reliance. The government nationalised the schools and used them to transmit that doctrine. It was armed and advised by the Soviet Union, signed a treaty of friendship with Moscow in 1974 and sent thousands of its officers to train there on Soviet scholarships. It remained authoritarian until its fall.

The regime collapsed in 1991 amid clan-based insurgencies. The family fled Somalia, spent about four years in refugee camps in Kenya and was resettled in the United States in March 1995, when Omar was 12\. She has said she became a citizen in 2000, at 17, derivatively through her father's naturalisation.

### **3\. Sources Point to Childhood Immigration Paperwork as the Investigation's Focus**

Two sources close to the investigation told Fox News Digital that it stems from a criminal fraud inquiry into immigration paperwork completed by Omar's father on her behalf when she was a child. A person familiar with the investigation told Reuters the same. Neither account is confirmed by the Justice Department, which has described the matter only as an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Naturalisation certificates and the underlying files held by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for Omar or her father are not public.

The Washington Post reported that a senior official said the investigation is nicknamed "World War Eleven" within the administration. The name refers to a remark Omar made at a press conference in 2025, when she said the Alien Enemies Act had not been used since "World War Eleven" before correcting herself.

HSI investigates federal offences including immigration document fraud, identity fraud and immigration benefit fraud. Its agents conduct criminal investigations and execute federal search warrants, a function distinct from the civil immigration enforcement carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations.

### **4\. Omar and Her Office Call the Search an Abuse of Power**

Omar responded publicly within hours, posting on X:

> I'm ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, called the search "an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies."

### **5\. A Separate Marriage Allegation Has Drawn Comment From Administration Officials**

A separate allegation about Omar's immigration history has been the subject of public comment by administration officials. In September, two of them said an investigation involving her was under way, both referring to her 2009 marriage rather than to the paperwork filed by her father.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke about the matter on about 11 September, in an interview with the commentator Benny Johnson at a Republican convention in Dallas:

> Something's going to happen. This is an ongoing investigation.

Describing the allegation that Omar had married her brother to bring him to the United States, and saying the man now lives in London, Mullin said investigators were examining:

> . . . the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with.

On the absence of any time limit for immigration fraud, he said:

> If you decided to break the law or lie on the information you gave the United States to be able to come into the United States through either asylum or because you were just wanting to seek a better life, but you didn't tell us who you actually were, you lied about certain things about your application, those things, there's no expiration to that. If we can prove it – that you shouldn't have been here in the first place – we'll deport you.

He added:

> Here's what I want to make sure we do: if we actually move a case forward, it's not a political case, it's an actual case, because they did things wrong.

Tom Homan, the White House border czar, confirmed an ongoing criminal investigation in a Fox News interview broadcast on 14 September:

> I know things are going on, but I can't give specifics of what's happening.

He continued:

> If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they're a congressman or not, no one's above the law. So, I'll leave it at that. We'll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation.

Asked about denaturalisation, Homan said:

> Denaturalization is a process. It's a very serious process, so if someone lies through that process to become a citizen, and we can prove they, in fact, lied or misrepresented themselves, we can absolutely denaturalize them. We've done it before many times over the last 40 years that I've been around.

Omar has consistently denied the marriage allegation, and no public evidence has established it. She married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009 and divorced in 2017\. Whether the September statements and Monday's search concern the same investigation has not been established.

### **Conclusion**

A federal judge authorised the search of Omar's home on a finding of probable cause, and the Justice Department has confirmed that it forms part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The department has not identified the subject of that investigation, released the warrant affidavit or said what agents took from the house. The reported focus on immigration paperwork filed by Omar's father rests on anonymous sources in reporting by Fox News Digital and Reuters.

Omar denies wrongdoing and has characterised the search as political targeting. No charges have been filed against her. She is standing for re-election on 3 November.
